How do you know what’s right and what’s wrong?

Even when you figure it out, the right thing is often the unpopular or unpleasant choice. More than just a system of do’s and don’ts, doing the right thing is grounded in a phrase from the past: “Remember who you are....” If we are clear about who we are, what to do next will become a little clearer. Using both the ancient testimony and New Testament, this unit pairs everyday ethical issues with convictions basic to the biblical story. Youth who complete this unit can have a clearer sense of what it means to claim a faith identity, a foundation that can help them sort out the gritty details of ethics shaped by faith. (6 sessions, plus extender session)

Sessions:

1. Creator Worth Worshiping • Help participants recognize the relationship between how we envision God and what we consider right and wrong.
2. The Sword in the Garden • Help participants embrace Jesus’ death and resurrection as a costly rejection of violence and a revelation of the way God overcomes evil.
3. In Step with the Spirit • As participants begin to separate from childhood authority figures and expand their search for other meaningful authorities, offer them the Holy Spirit as their guiding authority.
4. Death by Deceit • Help participants to trust their faith community as a resource for struggles with right and wrong rather than resorting to dishonesty.
5. The First Stone • Encourage participants to turn sin into a new start through Christ’s forgiveness and the faith community’s support.
6. The Needle's Eye • Confront participants with Jesus’ persistent attention to wealth and poverty and invite them to begin asking questions about the ethics of economic injustice.
7. Sharing Wisdom about Ethics (Extender Session option) • Connect youth with adults who can model Christ-like approaches to dilemmas of right and wrong.
