Clyde S. Kilby is best known as an early, long, and effective champion of works of C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkein, and other member of the Inklings that have now fascinated readers for decades. The essays in this volume, first published over fifty years ago, offer brilliant introductions to the themes of myth, theology, reason, and imagination that run through the works of fiction and prose from this renowned group of literary companions.

This first of two volumes introduces Christians to the reflections of Dr. Clyde Kilby, late professor of English at Wheaton College. In the mid-1960s he founded the Marion C. Wade Center, eventually housing the writings of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, G.K. Chesterton, Dorothy Sayers, Charles Williams, George MacDonald, and Owen Barfield. Not only does Kilby write lovingly and knowingly about the Inklings and related authors (Volume I), but also his interaction with their work prompted him to think deeply about Christian aesthetics (Volume II). Kilby knew Lewis and Tolkien and offers charming anecdotes regarding his friendship with them and the development of the Wade Center.
