The priests and pastoral ministers of our day increasingly reflect the multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual nature of the church in the United States. For a variety of reasons, they come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and countries of origin. Seminaries and religious communities are welcoming international candidates with the vision that diversity strengthens the character and mission of the church. Yet this ecclesial diversity also comes with unique challenges. To Be One in Christ is a groundbreaking resource that delves into the questions raised by these complexities and provides an in-depth analysis from theological, sociological, psychological, cultural, and Protestant perspectives.

Gerard McGlone and Fernando Ortiz are both nationally recognized experts on the integration of psychology and spirituality in priestly life. The book they have edited investigates issues, answers questions, and provides insights on the increasingly multicultural settings and programs affecting seminary and religious formation. The comprehensive resource will be welcome by vocation directors, seminary formators, clergy, religious, and seminarians.

Praise

To Be One in Christ responds to the current reality of interculturality-with its challenges and opportunities-in preparing and accompanying those from other countries for church ministry in the United States. The strength of this volume is its multi-disciplinary approach by fourteen contributing authors from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds themselves. Furthermore, the chapters address issues related to formation and ministry across the spectrum-vocation direction and recruitment, seminary assessment and formation, and international priests entering ministry. The use of case studies and practical suggestions are most helpful and relevant for those involved in accompanying international seminarians, religious and priests.
Roger Schroeder, SVD, DMiss, Louis J. Luzbetak, SVD, Professor of Mission and Culture, Professor of Intercultural Studies and Ministry, Catholic Theological Union at Chicago
This book begins a new stage in multicultural ministry. A valuable tool.
Emmanuel magazine
Dr. Ortiz and Father McGlone SJ, have gathered together a remarkable set of authors addressing various aspects of formation and ministry in a multicultural setting. They have added their own valuable observations and insights. To Be One in Christ is a very practical and timely contribution that should be of great assistance to seminary formation and to those who live and minister in a complex Church and world.
William S. Skylstad, Bishop Emeritus of Spokane
