Praise

This book offers five retreats of varying lengths to fit your schedule. While they are aimed at a Catholic audience, other Christian groups should have no problems using them. All of the retreats are structured around having a speaker, so if that sort of retreat isn't your style this might not be for you. Otherwise, it's worth a look.
YouthWorker Journal, September/October, 2005
Getaways with God is a new resource for youth leaders looking for creative retreat ideas for senior high youth. Author Maryann Hakowski has developed five retreat outlines to fit the busy schedules of youth and their leaders.

The themes range from a half-day Advent retreat that emphasizes the season's time of waking, to a weekend retreat that challenges young people to look at how Jesus is calling them to live. The book is based on the philosophy that retreats should give youth "an opportunity to get a better sense of self, to build relationships with others, and to grow closer to God."

The retreat outlines are imaginative and innovative, with prayers and games designed to interest youth at different levels. Key components of each retreat include icebreakers, talks, activities, discussions, quiet time, and worship.

Experienced leaders will appreciate the thought Hakowski has put into the design. At the same time, helpful hints about food, retreat settings, and supplies are available for leaders with less experience.

Each retreat outline is flexible and can be adapted for groups of 25 to 40 youth. The strengths of the book include its variety of challenging topics and workshop styles.

The retreats in Getaways with God include:
  • Who Are You Waiting For?, a half-day Advent retreat that gives youth an opportunity to discover more about Jesus.
  • Parents and Teens: Bridging the Gap, an evening retreat that invites youth to explore their relationships with their parents.
  • A Pilgrimage Retreat, a one-day retreat that introduces many different types of prayer.
  • Call and Response, an overnight retreat inviting youth to be open to God's vocational call.
  • Jesus Calls Us, a weekend retreat challenging youth to explore how Jesus calls them to live.
