Growing Up Catholic Mass Transit Cards - 2023-2024
Lectionary-based Conversation Starters for Families

Also available in Spanish

Runs across the catechetical year: from August 2023 through August 2024

Help your families reflect on each week’s Mass readings and see how they relate to their own family life. During the coronavirus shutdown, email out the weekly reflections or post them through your social media account.

Normally, families would keep the simple cards in their glove compartment so they can discuss them on their way to and from Mass. We coach you on how to hold a raffle with completed card each week in your faith formation classes.  This is a grass-roots resource—perfected in a parish setting—that really works!

What Are Mass Transit Cards?

Just as sports and academic challenges require preparation, so does Mass. Children (and parents!) need to ready their hearts and minds to be active participants in the Eucharist. In the process of helping their children understand the message and apply it to their lives, parents will also come to a greater awareness of all the Mass has to offer them in their daily journey, with all its joys and struggles.

How Do The Mass Cards Work?

The resource includes a card for each Sunday in the academic year. The front of each card notes the day, the lectionary readings, a key quotation from one of the readings, a family-friendly reflection, a one or two-sentence prayer, and a reflection question. The back of each card provides some simple questions to write in, including what Mass they attended, the color of the priest’s vestments, one insight from the homily, and something special they noticed at Mass that day.

Use this simple reproducible tool to engage your families each week!

Written by Patricia Giunta and Jennifer Bartley

Patricia Giunta has been a Director of Religious Education for 23 years in the Diocese of Joliet, Illinois. Over the years she recognized that the classroom model was missing the most important component for passing on faith to children – their parents! This realization turned into a passion to find and create materials that would help form parents and equip them to engage their own children in the process of finding Jesus through the Catholic faith.

Jennifer Bartley currently serves as Youth Minister at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Westmont, Illinois, where she and her husband have worshiped and raised their four children for over twenty years. Her passion for working with youth began with participation as a parent in a family-based religious education program, and continues to lead her to look for new ways to help other parents and their children grow closer to Christ.

We have used these for three years now. First we gave the to the parents. Then they stopped taking them and now we use them in the middle school program for teachers to use as a spring board for classroom discussion.

I am so excited to use these in family faith formation. They are so wisely put together from the instructions to the cards themselves. I am so excited to see our families fall more in love with the mass!
