Sheldon Cohen

For more than thirty years, Shelly Cohen has been part of America's music community. Educated at Brooklyn College, The Julliard School of Music, and Hartnett School of Music, he became Assistant Music Director for The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson in 1962 and remained so until Johnny's death in 1992.

His other television accomplishments include: Music Coordinator for the Emmy Awards and The Today Show's "Reflections of Irving Berlin and Richard Rogers." He also wrote and produced two Christmas Specials for NBC, "Christmas with Friends" and "Noel."

Shelly has also appeared as guest conductor with The Los Angeles Pops Orchestra, The Virginia Pops Orchestra, The Pasadena Pops Orchestra, and The Brentwood Symphony. In 1992 he formed the 80 voice New Horizon Singers and appeared in many venues in the Los Angeles area.

He is also the founder of The Pacific Pops Orchestra, a group of professional musicians who, in addition to concerts, are involved in many of Shelly's recording projects.

Recently, Shelly has become the Music Director for The San Fernando Valley Male Chorus and has formed his own swing band, The Swing Tones. In addition, he has produced and recording numerous albums for many major recording companies. Two of these were nominated for Grammy awards.

More recently, Shelly has branched out to write and produce shows for the stage. His latest were two shows for the West Valley Playhouse, "Klezmer Goes Hollywood" and "Once Upon a Time on Broadway." He is also a sought-after lecturer and in that capacity has toured both East and West coasts.

Joan Bransfield Graham

Award-winning author/poet JOAN BRANSFIELD GRAHAM has been widely published in journals, anthologies, textbooks, and magazines. She's done freelance writing for ABC-TV and The Writer.

Her books for children, Splish Splash and Flicker Flash (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)—shape poems about water and light—are in 12th and 13th printings and inspire students to write their own poetry. Both books were School Library Journal Best Books of the Year and National Council of Teachers of English Notable Children's Books in the Language Arts. Instructor Magazine selected Splish Splash for its list of 71 TOP BOOKS OF THE CENTURY, Nonfiction. Flicker Flash, a National Science Teachers Association-Children's Book Council Outstanding Science Trade Book, was nominated for Children's Book Awards in five states, among many other honors. Joan wrote proposals and won Literacy Grants to provide books for almost 100 children in Los Angeles area Habitat for Humanity homes.

A former teacher, Ms. Graham enjoys encouraging students to think creatively and has given hundreds of presentations at schools, libraries, and conferences all over the world. In March, 2004 the Casablanca American School flew her to Morocco and placed her with a host family. After four days of assemblies and poetry writing workshops, they took her to Marrakech. An avid photographer, Joan uses images from around the globe in her talks.

An honors graduate of Rowan University in New Jersey with a degree in Education, she studied art on the island of Majorca through the University of San Francisco, writing at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and poetry at UCLA.

Although she grew up on a barrier island along the southern coast of New Jersey, she's lived in the north, south, east, and west—Kentucky, Wisconsin, Virginia, and California—as her husband, Jim, was an FBI agent for 22 years. A friend calls them "Rhymes & Crimes." They have two grown daughters.

A founding member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Westlake Village, CA, she has been a Lector there for over 15 years. In April, 2009 she was a featured speaker at the Catholic Library Association Convention in Anaheim, CA. Her article, "Light Up Your Life with Poetry," appeared in the Sept. '09 issue of Catholic Library World.
